Experience Copenhagen With a Short Budget-Friendly Visit

The ambiance and atmosphere within Copenhagen have changed in recent years, but you’ll still find a city filled with so much history!  The streets are vibrant and energetic and you’ll always see more people on bicycles than in cars. Add in the eclectic culture, modern touches, and delectable Nordic cuisine this city is known for and you have a destination worthy of visiting more than once.  While it can be an expensive city, there are many free things to do in Copenhagen to help you manage your budget!

The Best Time to Visit Copenhagen

As with many other parts of the world, the weather in Copenhagen changes with the season.  The winter months are generally cold and rainy, while the summer is warm (but still wet). Most travelers will find the months of May through September the best times to visit because of the weather and the abundance of festivals. Plus, since the weather is so nice, all the cafés put tables and chairs out on the sidewalks for dining al fresco.

You can definitely visit during the winter months, but understand that most of the city hibernates for the season…so there will be less to do. The only exception is the two weeks around Christmas when you will find extra crowds because everyone is celebrating the holidays and visiting Christmas markets.

Tip: Early spring is another budget-friendly option.  People in Denmark have found ways to make the off-season comfortable with heaters and warm blankets often found in outdoor seating areas.  Tivoli has large heaters surrounded by seats in the off-season that mimic the feeling of sitting around a campfire. It all lends itself to a wonderful feeling of coziness which the Danish refer to as “Hygge” (pronounced Hoo-guh).

Best Things to Do During a Visit to Copenhagen

There are so many things to do when visiting Copenhagen and the best part is that most of them are very budget-friendly.

Take a Free Walking Tour

You can easily wander around the city streets in Copenhagen on your own. Some of our best memories have come from exploring cities on foot.  Copenhagen has a lot of art installations across the city which make for nice surprises as you wander on foot.

As well, one of the best ways to get yourself acclimated, and learn a few things at the same time, is to take a guided walking tour.  Most of these tours last two hours and your guide will share quite a bit of the city’s history with you as you pass by popular attractions.  As you are walking along, you can make a mental note of what you would like to stop to explore more in-depth during your visit.

Visit Tivoli Gardens

If you are limited with your time, there is one destination you must see in Copenhagen and that’s Tivoli Gardens.  While this is the oldest theme park in the world, you don’t need to go on any of the rides to find Tivoli enjoyable. The gardens and themed areas alone are worth the price of admission.

Tip: Stop for a drink on the patio at the Biergarten.  It was cold and rainy when we visited but with the friendly atmosphere, the complimentary warm blankets, and the great service, it all felt very cozy and enjoyable.

Wander Through the National Museum

If you are looking for a way to learn more about Copenhagen, and see artifacts from the past, then the National Museum must be on your list of things to do.  You will find exhibits from thousands of years ago, including one from 1400 BC–the Trundholm Sun Chariot.

Tip: Look for the display of ancient “Brudevælte Lurs”, a set of horns found in a bog that is so well preserved that they can still be played today.   They look like something taken directly from a Dr. Seuss story.

Take a Picture with the Little Mermaid

As you are walking around the Langelinie Promenade, you are going to find the Little Mermaid Statue.  This statue is one of the most popular landmarks within the entire city and it was created back in 1913 to honor Hans Christian Andersen.

Tip: While you can try to take a selfie with this statue, it is best if you have someone else take your picture for you.

Rent a Bicycle and Ride to the Botanical Garden

Since you are in Copenhagen, if you want to immerse yourself into the lives of the locals, it means riding a bike or walking wherever you want to go (though the public transit system is also a great option).

A visit to the Botanical Garden is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. It is ten hectares of gardens right in the center of the city.  All the glasshouses were built during the 1870s, but the conservatory is the most impressive. You will have the chance to see more than thirteen thousand different plant species during your visit.

Tip: The plants that will capture your attention the most will likely be the ones inside the Arctic House which is air-conditioned to support plant species from colder climates.

Grab a Cup of Coffee in Nyhavn

Nyhavn used to be the worst place to visit in this city, but the area has completely changed over the years.  In fact, it’s now considered a top destination to visit. We recommend grabbing a cup of coffee and walking along the canal to see the colorfully painted houses.  If you love books, you will want to pay close attention to the houses that are numbered eighteen, twenty, and sixty-seven, because Hans Christian Andersen lived in those three houses at different points during his lifetime.

Tip: These three houses are marked with plaques so don’t worry, you won’t miss them.

Do a Little Shopping on Strøget

Vacations and shopping go hand in hand because everyone needs a souvenir to take home with them.  You’ll find exactly what you want on Strøget, which is a pedestrian street that continues for miles.  The downside to shopping in this part of the city is everything is so expensive.

Tip: Go all the way down to the end and wander into the Old City where you will find a few stores that have been open for generations and their prices are much more reasonable.  If their prices are also higher than your budget, window shopping is a fun pastime that costs you no money at all!

Visit the Round Tower

Walk up to the top of the Round Tower, the oldest functioning observatory in Europe, to get a great view of the city.  Hans Christian Anderson used to visit the library within the Round Tower for inspiration.

Best Way to Save Money While Vacationing in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is an expensive place to visit but there are ways to help you afford it

Copenhagen Card

There are always ways to save money when you are on vacation, but Copenhagen has made it easy with their Copenhagen Card.  There are four different cards available and you can choose the one that will fit your needs the most. The most popular one is valid for seventy-two hours, but they are also available for twenty-four hours, forty-eight hours, and one hundred twenty hours.

Once you have purchased this card, you will receive free transportation throughout Copenhagen for the entire time it is valid.  You will also get free admission to eighty-seven different attractions and museums. Therefore, this card will easily pay for itself during your visit and save you a good amount of money at the same time.

Budget Hotel

Staying in a hotel like the Cabin Inn is not luxurious but it will save you money.  The rooms are very small (like a cabin on a ship or train) but you will spend very little time in them.

Food Halls and Markets

Buying your food at one of the food halls or markets, of which Torvehallen Market is the most famous, will allow you to try New Nordic cuisine at a fraction of the price you would pay at an upscale restaurant.  It’s closer to a street food experience. While nothing is cheap in Copenhagen, this will at least be affordable.

Tip: You must try smorebrød (Danish open-faced sandwiches) and Grød (sweet or savoury porridge that will become your new comfort food craving).  I must admit, traditional Danish hotdogs topped with remoulade, thinly sliced pickles, and crunchy fried onions are also something we still crave!

One last bonus tip…

It’s common for people to head to a bar along the canal in Nyhaven to have a few beers in the evening after dinner.  Buy your beer at a local grocery store and sit along the canal like a local. You’ll pay far less for your beer and the views are fantastic.

You will love your time in Copenhagen.  There is a laid back feeling to the city that is enhanced by how easy it is to cycle or walk wherever you want to go.  As well, if you are a foodie, you will find the chance to have both traditional and New Nordic cuisine exciting.

With the state of the world right now, you may not be ready to start traveling yet. That’s ok!
Don’t let that stop you from starting to plan (and save for) YOUR Copenhagen adventure!
